Tumours
As in any other part of the body, benign and malignant primary tumours can also occur in the shoulder. Remote secondary tumours (metastases) can also form in the shoulder. The commonest malignant primary tumours originate from the bone itself. The most frequent metastases have their primary seat in the prostate, breast or thyroid gland. Treating malignant tumours is always a multidisciplinary affair. Surgical treatment on its own is rarely, if at all, successful. Surgical treatment has to be discussed with an oncologist (cancer specialist) and radiotherapist. Surgery only represents one part of the overall treatment plan.
